Here's What I Learned After Deleting 80% of My Connections

2015: I had 2,000+ LinkedIn connections.

I attended every industry event. Collected hundreds of business cards. Stayed "visible."

Total opportunities generated: Zero.

Then I read something that changed everything:

"You're not one relationship away from a breakthrough. You're one RIGHT relationship away."

So I did an experiment.

I audited my entire network. Asked one question about each person:

"In the last 12 months, has this relationship created mutual value?"

80% answered: No.

I deleted them. All of them.

Anchor Relationships

These are decision-makers one level above where you want to be. They don't work for you. You don't work for them. But when they see opportunities, they think of you first.

Peer Allies

These are people at your level building in parallel. You share resources, intelligence, and introductions. When one rises, they pull the others up.

Value Recipients

These are people you've helped significantly. They owe you nothing, but they remember. When the moment comes, they return the favour 10x.

That's it. 3 + 12 + 50 = 65 strategic relationships.

Not 2,000 LinkedIn connections. Not 50 networking events per year.
